S. Raman
Raman started with humble beginnings, growing up in a car shed for about six years of his childhood, gradually rising to occupy some of the top positions in the Financial Sector.
Raman joined the State Bank of India as a Clerk at 19, while not yet a graduate. On completing B.Com as a University Topper and Rank-Holder, he joined Bank of India at 21 as a Direct Recruit Officer where he spent 35 years across India, besides two stints abroad. He was Chief Executive, of US Operations, during 2005-08, which coincided with the Great Financial Crisis, providing him a ring-side view of the catastrophic events then.
Raman became Executive Director, of Union Bank of India in 2008 and Chairman & Managing Director, of Canara Bank in September 2012 for about two years, which was a period of immense achievements. Thereafter, he was selected as a Whole Time Member, of the Securities and Exchange Board of India in December 2012, and had a highly successful period as a securities regulator for about five years.
Post-retirement, Raman had to face some cataclysmic events. The way he faced these difficulties (which many have found deeply moving and inspiring) is an important part of the book, which essentially is the story of a remarkable personal and professional life.
