Vikas is a master's student in the School of Public Policy, at Georgia
Institute of Technology. He has dedicated over 15 years in the field
through surveys, campaigns, and other initiatives to protect India's
wildlife and forests. In additon to butterflies, he has been an avid
birdwatcher for the past 18 years, recording over 1000 species
globally and has also worked with moths and coastal fauna. As part of
his work on butterflies he served as the Chennai City Butterfly
Coordinator from 2015 to 2021. During this period, he and a team of
butterfly enthusiasts from Chennai worked to compile a list of
butterfly species seen in the city.
This book is a compilation of the data collected by Vikas and several
others over a span of 10 years. It was designed, edited, and compiled
by a team of naturalists and butterfly enthusiasts comprising him,
Aditya Ramakrishnan, Anooja A, Aswathi Asokan, Ekadh Ranganathan,
Mahathi Narayanaswamy, M. Nishanth Arvind, Nanditha Ram Satagopan,
Rohith Srinivasan and Smriti Mahesh. All members of the team are
college students, who have a deep interest in wildlife and its
conservation, and have contributed to the data set in different ways.
They met through the Chennai Young Naturalists' Network (YNN) and have
since worked with each other on various projects related to nature
education. Through this book and their work in the future, they hope
to raise awareness about Chennai’s biodiversity and the need to
conserve it.
